This painting was a gift for Matt and done completely in secret in the summer of 2010. I wanted the painting to have an abstract and interactive feature. I started to wonder how I could ‘metalize’ the surface itself. I remembered I once saw a metal powder that allowed you to create a message board by mixing it into paint. I found some online, mixed it into the gesso and treated the surface. Then I glued magnets onto the backs of tiles, arranged them on the boards, and painted the portrait on top. I finished it in my friend’s apartment in Tribeca while she was working abroad. It took two months of sneaking out to complete.
